A large evergreen shrub filled the planting bed at the corner of the house and extended along both adjoining walls. The bed had timber edging along the front and no mulch beneath the shrub.

All existing plants, timber edging, and timber and fieldstone retaining walls were removed from the foundation beds around the house. Versa-Lok retaining walls replaced the old walls, and new planting beds were designed, installed, and planted. Several of the larger fieldstones were reused in the new beds.

Crews cleared the foundation beds of all existing plants, timber edging, and the original timber and fieldstone retaining walls, then installed new Versa-Lok retaining walls in their place. The Stubenhofer team designed, built, and planted new beds within the space, working several of the larger fieldstones from the old walls into the layout.

The area at the back of the property was difficult for the homeowner to maintain. Crews covered the slopes with oversized stone, installed a planted bark bed on the flat ground, and added timber steps to the lower slope.

Our crews removed the ground cover, regraded the bed, and installed decorative gravel to reduce maintenance. A low hedge was planted along the sidewalk, and the existing shrubs were pruned and shaped.

Crews removed the English ivy and brush, then replanted the cleared area. Oversized stone was installed along the base of the slope to improve drainage.

The original foundation planting consisted of a narrow row of shrubs beneath the front window. Stubenhofer Landscaping expanded the bed across the front of the house with mulch, smaller shrubs, and flowering plants, then extended it toward the large tree.

The lawn previously extended to the foundation without any plants along the side of the house. A curved mulch bed now holds hostas and compact shrubs beneath the windows and around the air-conditioning unit.

Tourist Attraction

Stubenhofer Landscaping designed these planting beds for a popular tourist attraction in Erie. The beds combine flowering plants, hostas, ground cover, and large stones across several areas of the property.

Timber Planter and Hydroseeded Lawn

This project included a treated-timber planter beside the house and a new lawn established through hydroseeding.

Tiered Planting Beds and Water Feature

Versa-Lok walls form the tiered beds beside the patio and support Asian-style plantings around a bamboo water feature.

We removed the original foundation shrubs and replaced them with smaller flowering plants. The lower plantings add color and expose more of the brick facade.

Nautical Commercial Entrance Design

The entrance combines ornamental grasses and gravel mulch with large stones and nautical wood posts. A decking-board walk meets the concrete path beside the building.

Lakefront Brick Patio and Water Garden

Paving-brick walks connect the house to a matching patio and water garden beside the lake. Our crews completed extensive trenching for drain pipes and underground electrical lines before hydroseeding the new lawn.

Brick Patio and Deck with Five Access Points

The private brick patio and deck extend along the side and back of the house with five access points. Built-in catch basins collect runoff from the patio surface. A waterfall beside the patio appears in the water gardens section.

Stubenhofer Landscaping retained several established shrubs and expanded the planting bed along the front porch. Smaller plants fill the new sections within a continuous stone border extending to the front steps.

Redesigning the backyard and deck required extensive drainage work across the steep slope. Stubenhofer Landscaping split established perennials from other beds on the property and transplanted them into the new stone-bordered beds.

Numerous low perennials and persistent spring moisture made the backyard difficult to maintain and mow. The revised beds use larger plants to screen the rear deck and stone mulch to eliminate mowing beside the house.
