Wood Retaining Walls in Erie, PA
Stubenhofer Landscaping designs and builds aesthetic and highly functional wood retaining walls that hold back hillsides and gardens on residential and commercial properties throughout the Erie, PA area. These structures handle steep slopes and wet weather across the region. You gain flat, usable ground with a natural look that blends with the surrounding trees and landscape.
Erosion damages patios and driveways on sloped properties throughout the region each year. Our walls redirect water flow and protect these areas from soil loss and washout during heavy storms. Yard space opens up on ground previously too steep to maintain or enjoy safely with family.
Why Work With Stubenhofer Landscaping for Wood Walls
- Built specifically for Erie’s climate and soil conditions – Material selection and construction methods are tailored to withstand freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rain, and regional soil movement, not just generic installs.
- Engineered for water management and erosion control – Focus on drainage systems and water redirection to actively protect patios, driveways, and foundations from washout, not just hold back soil.
- Cost-effective alternative without sacrificing performance – Delivers comparable structural strength to stone or concrete retaining walls while maintaining a lower upfront cost and more natural aesthetic.
- Site-specific design and installation process – Each project begins with an on-site evaluation of slope, drainage patterns, and usable space to create a retaining wall that maximizes functionality, not a one-size-fits-all build.
Benefits of Our Wood Retaining Walls
Wood retaining walls cost less than stone or concrete alternatives while delivering comparable structural function and reliable long-term support. They still stop soil movement and stay strong for decades without cracking or shifting. You get the same holding power at a lower price with a warmer, more natural look than concrete blocks.
We build small garden borders and terraced walls around steps and patios. Our first visit covers your budget and how water flows across your yard. The visit tells us where to build so you reclaim flat space for planting or entertaining and keep erosion away from your driveway and foundation.
Our installers level the ground and pack the base before setting the first boards in place. We ensure proper drainage behind the wall so water escapes instead of pushing against the boards during heavy rain or snowmelt. That attention to the base and drainage keeps the wall sound for years without expensive repairs or early replacement.
Durable wood construction adds lasting value and visual appeal to any yard project. The completed wall stands firm through heavy storms and year-round weather without shifting out of place. Your new wall protects your landscape investment and improves your property for decades.

Below are just a few of the many successful wooden retaining wall projects we’ve completed for Erie homeowners and businesses.
Treated Wood Retaining Walls
The old post-and-board wall around the spa was leaning and had to be taken down. Our crew removed it and cut back the bank to more than double the usable space leading up to it. Treated timbers went in along the excavated grade, and we replanted the existing greenery behind the wall. Bricks matching the pavers around the hot tub now pave the access area. The finished wall holds back the landscaped bank and creates a clean, level path.
Before & After
The old wall along the driveway edge was rotting and uneven. Our crew pulled it out and built a new 6x6 treated-wood wall that follows the same stepped layout. The planting area behind it now sits level with a clean edge. Fresh soil ties the new wall into the slope beside the drive.
Before & After
The original layout featured low, weathered-wood sections beside the driveway and a narrow concrete walk leading toward the house. We rebuilt the area with treated wood sections on both sides of the entry steps, then finished the stair treads with paving brick for a cleaner connection from the drive to the yard.
Around the Pool
The slope behind this existing pool dropped away, leaving only a narrow strip of usable space around the water. Our crew built a tall treated-wood wall along the rear edge to level the grade and open up the area. Steps and a matching railing run the full length for safe access between the patio and the yard above. The work created a broad, flat surface that wraps cleanly around the pool and connects the spaces.
Before & After
The old concrete-block wall had to come out. We replaced it with a treated-wood wall and added brick treads to the steps. That replacement included drainage at the step area to keep water off the walk.
Retaining Wall for Driveway Parking
We cut back the hillside along the driveway and built a treated-wood retaining wall to hold back the soil. That work created a flat parking area at the top with railings around the edge for safety. Steps and a mid-level deck lead from the parking space down to the lower yard.
Before & After
We pulled out the old railroad-tie wall and several trees along the driveway edge. A new 6x6 treated-wood wall took its place along the driveway to hold back the slope and create a clean edge between the upper drive and lower lawn. The stone behind the wall covers the soil and gives the slope a finished look, keeping the lawn area neat.
Before & After
The old wall along this patio was rotting and covered in moss. Our crews tore it out and built a new 6x6 wooden retaining wall that follows the same curved edge. The precision layout matched the curve to the site's shape. Fresh soil behind the wall restores the garden bed.
