Paver Retaining Wall Installation | Stubenhofer Landscaping
At Stubenhofer Landscaping, we design and install aesthetically pleasing, durable paver retaining walls. These structures control slopes and reduce soil erosion while creating more usable yard space on your property. Properly installed walls also improve curb appeal and add functional outdoor areas where steep grades previously limited use.
Paver retaining walls use interlocking segmental concrete blocks that stack without mortar or traditional footings. Systems like Versa-Lok, Rockwood Classic, and Stonewall Select offer multiple colors and textures to match your home's exterior. This modular construction provides design flexibility and allows for curves, corners, steps, and terraced layouts that poured concrete cannot achieve.
Benefits Of Our Paver Walls
Paver retaining walls provide practical solutions for properties with sloped terrain and drainage issues:
- Prevent soil erosion and control water runoff. The interlocking design holds soil in place on slopes and channels water away from problem areas. Your landscape stays intact during spring thaw and summer storms.
- Transform steep grades into level, usable space. Terraced walls create flat areas for patios, gardens, and lawns where slopes previously made these features impossible. You gain functional outdoor space that didn't exist before.
- Need minimal maintenance over their lifespan. Mortarless construction flexes with freeze-thaw cycles rather than cracking like poured concrete. Individual pavers can shift slightly without compromising the wall's structural integrity.
- Come in multiple colors and textures for design flexibility. You can choose finishes that match your home's exterior or create contrast with the existing architecture. Most manufacturers offer at least six color options per block style.
- Add structure and visual definition to outdoor spaces. A well-built wall creates clear borders between different landscape zones and gives sloped yards a finished, intentional appearance. The improvement is immediately noticeable from the street and the backyard.
How to Maintain Your Paver Retaining Wall
Inspect your wall annually and after severe weather for signs of movement, cracks, or blocks shifting out of alignment. Pull weeds growing between joints before roots spread and widen the gaps. Remove accumulated leaves and debris from the base, where they trap moisture against the blocks.
Check drainage outlets at the wall base after heavy rain to ensure water flows freely away from the structure. Hosing down the wall surface once or twice a year removes dirt and pollen buildup that can dull the block finish. Spring is the ideal time for annual cleaning and weed control before summer growth starts.

Versa-Lok Retaining Wall Project
Stubenhofer removed a leaning concrete retaining wall along this driveway and replaced it with a curved Versa-Lok system that includes integrated steps and terraced planting beds. The project included replanting existing shrubs, adding new plantings, and installing new lights and signposts at the entrance.
Pool Area Retaining Wall
We built a Versa-Lok retaining wall with integrated steps at the rear of this property to prepare the site for pool installation. Once the pool was complete, a paver patio was added around the concrete pool deck to create an expanded entertainment and seating area.
Versa-Lok Retaining Backyard Wall
This backyard transformation began with a Versa-Lok retaining wall and steps to create multiple yard levels before pool excavation. After installation, the paver patio was extended around the pool deck to create a larger entertainment space with defined seating areas at different elevations.
Complete Patio and Wall Redesign
Stubenhofer removed two failing Stonewall Select retaining walls and replaced them with new Versa-Lok walls that better suit the property's layout and drainage needs. A tan paver patio was installed at the rear of the house to create an entertainment area. Materials from the demolished walls were reused to construct two additional retaining walls at the front entrance and alongside the new patio.
Terraced Basement Entrance Wall
This garage entrance had severe soil washout from water running down the unprotected slope onto the driveway. A multi-tier Versa-Lok wall system with steps now prevents erosion and provides stable access between the upper yard and garage level.
Rockwood Classic 6 Retaining Wall
A curved Rockwood Classic wall wraps around a new garage addition and includes built-in steps for yard access. Drainage systems were placed both behind the wall and in the narrow space between the wall and garage to protect the foundation from water accumulation.
Terraced Versa-Lok Pool Retaining Wall
Dark brown Versa-Lok blocks form a terraced wall system around the pool and handle the grade change from deck level down to the water. LED lighting beneath the wall caps illuminates the steps and wall face for safe nighttime pool access.
Stonewall Select Retaining Wall
The old wall along this patio was rotting and covered in moss. Our crews tore it out and built a new 6x6 wooden retaining wall that follows the same curved edge. The precision layout matched the curve to the site's shape. Fresh soil behind the wall restores the garden bed.
Versa-Lok Wall with Lighting
A curved Versa-Lok wall runs along the driveway edge with matching gray light fixtures built into the block face. The flush-mounted lights illuminate the area without requiring separate posts.
Terraced Wall with Paver Walk
Several Versa-Lok wall tiers hold planting beds at different heights with steps between levels. A sloped paving-brick walk borders the lower wall section, while Versa-Lok lights brighten the path after dark.
Raised Planter with Steps
Reddish-brown Versa-Lok blocks build a raised planter above yard grade with curved steps integrated into the wall structure. The paving-brick landing at ground level provides a stable footing for anyone using the steps to access the elevated planting bed.
Multi-Level Rockwood Retaining Wall
This terraced Rockwood Classic system converts a sloped yard into distinct elevation levels with steps connecting each tier. The reddish-brown blocks define raised areas for different landscape uses at three separate heights.
Hillside Excavation and Wall
Major excavation removed the steep overgrown slope behind this property, while a tall Versa-Lok wall holds back the upper grade. The project converts what was an inaccessible hillside into a large, flat yard.
Foundation Planting Bed Wall
A low retaining wall along this house foundation raises the planting bed and eliminates the slope that previously ran down to the lawn. Brick edging at the base of the wall defines the yard edge, while fresh-flowering plants enhance the front yard's appearance.
Rockwood Classic 8 Retaining Wall 1
This project replaced a completely collapsed retaining structure with a tall Rockwood Classic wall in red blocks that holds back the upper grade. The wall establishes a flat gravel parking space alongside the garage for trailer and equipment storage.
Rockwood Classic 8 Retaining Wall 2
Rockwood Classic paver stones wrap the perimeter of a new garage and manage the grade transition between the structure and the surrounding yard. Drainage systems were installed both behind the wall and in the space between the wall and the garage to prevent water accumulation near the foundation.
Property Line Retaining Wall
Stubenhofer Landscaping installed a Rockwood Classic 6 paver retaining wall along this property line. The wall runs parallel to the split-rail fence and provides grade separation in the driveway area.
Front Yard Paver Retaining Wall
We built a Versa-Lok wall to level this front yard with the sidewalk and eliminate the slope down to the street. Fresh landscaping fills the raised bed while a decorative fence at the top marks the property edge.
Versa-Lok Retaniing Wall Replacement
Stubenhofer demolished failing brick-and-stone retaining walls near this driveway and rebuilt the area with curved Versa-Lok blocks. The project also addressed drainage by rerouting the downspout line and clearing outdated shrubs from the planting bed.
Two-Tier Wall Reconstruction
A deteriorating two-tier retaining wall was torn down after an inspection revealed that the original construction lacked geotextile stabilization fabric behind the blocks. Stubenhofer rebuilt both wall sections with proper geotextile reinforcement between select block courses to prevent future failure and improve long-term stability.
